The Linux Cost Controversy

Linux worshippers may not like this, so if you're a bit squeamish or easily upset, you may want to turn away from the screen: A recent IDC report has revealed it may be cheaper to maintain a network running Microsoft (Nasdaq: MSFT) Windows 2000 than one running Linux.

It seems that Linux-based networks require companies to spend more bucks on staffing to keep networks trouble-free in four out of five basic workload areas: network infrastructure , print serving, file serving and security applications.
Basically, researchers discovered that it costs 11 to 22 percent less to maintain these services running Windows 2000 Server over a five-year period, because of less spending on employees, IT training and outsourced support. That reduced spending is due to the fact that it takes more time to configure, program and support Linux-based systems.

So, what does all this mean? In a nutshell, the initial savings of purchasing a Linux operating system -- even if it was free -- will come back and bite you in the long run. This is enough to send chills up and down the spine of any Linux advocate.
