"We won't give up on jailbreaking iOS devices because this is too important for us and we already have a part of the jailbreak for iOS 6 and we will be ready right on time for it," Cyril said.

On Friday, May 25th hackers from the Chronic Dev Team released Absinthe 2.0, a tool that jailbreaks iOS 5.1.1 on nearly all iOS devices, including the third-gen iPad. The untethered jailbreak can be performed on an iOS device after downloading the free Absinthe app on any Mac, Windows or Linux computer. Once again proving that jailbreaking is becoming more mainstream, impressive Absinthe download numbers have been announced from over the weekend.

We told you over the weekend that the untethered jailbreak for iOS devices running iOS 5.1.1 is dropping this week. The hacker who’s been spearheading the upcoming jailbreak, pod2g of the Chronic Dev Team, confirmed that the jailbreak was nearly done and arriving in a “matter of days.”

Coincidentally, the Chronic Dev Team will be presenting at the annual Hack in the Box (HITB) conference this week in Amsterdam, The Netherlands. Since the 5.1.1. jailbreak is expected to drop this week, we’re placing bets on a release this Friday during the team’s keynote.

This year’s Hack-in-the-Box Netherlands security conference takes place next week at the Okura Hotel in Amsterdam, and will be the first ever week-long HITB event. A new iOS jailbreak is expected.

Guesting on IOActive’s blog, the HITB team has produced a detailed commentary on next week’s HITB security conference. It introduces the keynotes and their speakers, such as Bruce Schneier, CISO at BT Counterpane, talking about ‘Trust, Security and Society’; and Andy Ellis, CSO at Akamai, discussing the evolution of Akamai’s security program.

Does the iPad cannibalize Apple's laptops?

Is Apple cutting the MacBook's throat with the iPad?

The question -- whether the company's tablet cannibalizes sales of its own portable computing line -- is ultimately impossible to answer, or at least quantify: One can't look into a counter-factual crystal ball to view an alternate universe without the iPad. But Tim Cook, Apple's CEO, believes that the iPad does block sales of at least some Apple personal computers.

The iPad is an addition, not a replacement for today's IT professional

When I think about the iPad as a sysadmin's tool, I don't think about it in terms of can/can't. Obviously, the iPad can be a sysadmin tool. Heck, I used Windows Mobile 6 phones as sysadmin tools. It wasn’t a lot of fun, but if you were really far from a laptop, tin cans with string, or a sharp stick and soft dirt, you could do it. Prior to getting my first iPad, I used my iPhone to some effect. The truth is you can use an iPhone (or really, any smartphone) as a sysadmin tool as long as you have a decent Web browser and few key apps.

Why Apple Should Launch a Smaller iPad

Rumors that Apple has been developing a smaller iPad -- which many have been referring to as the iPad mini -- for almost as long as the iPad has been around.

Late last week, Ciccarese Design published images of its own iPad mini mockups and its take on the device is unarguably beautiful. But while sources have indicated that Apple has developed a prototype iPad mini, many believe that it will never actually see the light of day.
