IBM has announced a new tranche of open source products designed to fuel cloud developer innovation.

The first is developerWorks Open which, apart from playing havoc with our spellchecker, is a collaborative platform designed to give developers access to high-potential open source projects and resources.

IBM puts software and cloud at the center of storage

The future of storage may not be in storage itself, but in the intelligence to manage it.

Major storage vendors and startups alike are now pushing software-defined systems spanning anything from a set of arrays to a whole enterprise. On Tuesday, IBM placed a big bet on this trend, announcing the first product in a portfolio called IBM Spectrum Storage and saying it will invest $1 billion in storage software over the next five years.

Following lukewarm quarterly financial results last week, reports claim IBM is set to cut over a quarter of its workforce this week.

IBM has currently a workforce of 431,000 people, but Sky News claims  that Forbes’ reporter Robert X Cringely is forecasting the job cuts.

According to Cringely, around 26 percent of IBM will get calls from their managers telling them their jobs are surplus to Big Blue’s requirements. IBM has neither confirmed nor denied the rumours.

IBM's Watson Analytics enters public beta

IBM has launched the public beta of Watson Analytics, its set of cloud-based predictive and analytics tools.

The move to public beta for Watson Analytics on Thursday follows its private beta launch this September. IBM said at the time of the beta releas the service will be made available under a freemium model through iOS, Android mobile devices and the web.

IBM expected to unveil chip manufacturing deal Monday

Under pressure to boost margins, IBM is set to make what it calls a "major business announcement" Monday morning, an indication that it has finalized a deal to transfer chip-making operations to GlobalFoundries.

IBM announced Sunday that it would be issuing its quarterly earnings statement early Monday, moving it up from its previous schedule, timed for after the close of markets. The company said it would also separately make a business announcement.

IBM shareholder drops NSA lawsuit over China biz loss

An IBM shareholder has decided to drop a lawsuit filed against the company alleging its cooperation with the U.S. National Security Agency (NSA) in a cyberspying scheme had resulted in a loss of business in China.

The Louisiana Sheriffs' Pension & Relief Fund had alleged the loss of Chinese business caused IBM's market value to dip by nearly US$13 billion, and sued Big Blue for failing to reveal its involvement in NSA cyberspying program.
