Is Dell looking to kill PCs with "Project Ophelia"?

Dell is reportedly investigating a move to take the company private in a leveraged buy-out to clear the decks for a radical repositioning of the company. And according to a report from Atlantic Media's Quartz, that includes relaunching Dell's desktop and mobile business around a brand-new product: a computing device the size of a thumb-drive that will sell for about $50.

Dell SecureWorks takes security solutions to the cloud

Dell SecureWorks has launched vulnerability management and web application scanning services for Dell PublicCloud customers, as well as Dell Cloud Dedicated Service and VMware vCenter 5.0 environments.

In addition, Dell SecureWorks plans to offer cloud customers what it calls a Global Threat Intelligence Service that offers analysis of security data points for vulnerabilities, emerging threats and new "adversary activity," according to Dell, Round Rock, Texas.

Dell launched its software group at the beginning of 2012, and since then the company has been defining a strategy for the group and populating it through acquisitions – the biggest and most recent of which was Quest Software.

Techworld caught up with John Swainson head of the new software group when he was on a recent visit to London, to find about how the strategy is going, how it compares with HP, and what customers can expect from Dell on the software front in the coming months.

Dell buys security start-up SonicWall for undisclosed sum

Dell has announced today that it has acquired security vendor SonicWall for an undisclosed price with the acquisition expected to be completed within the next 60 days.

SonicWall claims to have over 300,000 customers using its array of firewalls, secure remote access plus back up and recovery tools. John Swainson, president of Dell software group, indicated the acquisition would help fill their growing security line and would put Dell in a great position in the fast-growing parts of the software security business world.
