AMD unimpressed with Intel six shooter

As you might expect, Advanced Micro Devices is keeping its chin up amid the ticktocking it's taking from rival Intel in the server space. This week's launch of the six-core "Dunnington" Xeon MP processors - which plug into four-socket and larger machines - made a lot of noise for Intel and its partners, but AMD wants you to be realistic about the prospects for processors in this part of the server space.

It also wants everyone to understand that the Dunnington Xeons aren't out-gunning its quad-core "Barcelona" Opterons by all that much - if at all.

While Intel steals the limelight with its Intel Developer Forum (IDF) this week, AMD quietly prepared its own competitor to Intel's Atom. The CPU, likely named the "Sempron BGA," looks set to debut in October on a 3.5-inch SBC (single board computer) from Taiwanese manufacturer iBase.

AMD Unveils Latest Dual-Chip Graphics Card

Advanced Micro Devices (NYSE: AMD) on Tuesday introduced a dual-processor graphics card for gamers that the company claims is capable of more than 2 trillion operations a second.

Along with the ATI Radeon HD 4870 X2, AMD unveiled the slower HD 4850 X2. Both cards, which slip into a PCIe slot on the PC's motherboard, comprise two HD 4800 series GPUs. The HD 4870 X2 delivers 2.4 teraflops, or about three times the processing power as a single-GPU HD 4870 card. A teraflop equals a trillion floating point operations per second.

AMD’s Chief Executive Officer Hector Ruiz Steps Down

Advanced Micro Devices, the world’s second largest maker of x86 central processing units, on Thursday announced that its chief executive officer Hector Ruiz has stepped down from his top executive position and that the board of directors elected president and chief operating officer Derrick Meyer to become the next CEO of AMD. Mr. Ruiz will continue to serve as the executive chairman of the board.

AMD's 'Puma' Notebook Platform To Pounce On Intel

Advanced Micro Devices (NYSE: AMD) on Wednesday launched its first platform built solely for notebooks, leveraging its ATI graphics technology to try to make its new products more attractive thanIntel (NSDQ: INTC)'s.

In unveiling the platform, codenamed Puma, at the Computex conference in Taipei, Taiwan, AMD goes head-to-head with Intel's Centrino platform. The new components within Puma include the Turion X2 Ultra Dual-Core Mobile processor and the AMD 7-series chipset. The latter comprises the AMD M780G and SB700.

Rumor: AMD May Divide Itself Into Two Companies

Advanced Micro Devices, the world’s second largest supplier of x86 central processing units, may divide itself into two separate companies in order to boost efficiencies of both. AMD has publicly indicated that the company needed restructuring and also admitted that it has been developing so-called “asset-smart” strategy in the last few quarters, but no actual details are clear.

Advanced Micro Devices has unveiled its first computer brand, aimed at small and medium-sized businesses, with design and sales help from its major chip customers such as Dell.

AMD Business Class desktop personal computers will be followed by notebook PCs in the second half of this year.

AMD's Chief Technology Officer resigns

AMD confirmed on Friday that Phil Hester has resigned from his position of chief technology officer at the company.

Hester follows Dave Orton and Henri Richard who left AMD last July and September, respectively. AMD said that Hester is leaving on his own accord pursue other opportunities. There is no replacement for Hester at this time.
