Don't become Twitter phishing bait

We continue to see Twitter users being targeted by criminal campaigns designed to phish passwords for the site. The problem is that often they are disguised as direct messages (DMs in Twitter parlance) from your online friends.

The latest attack comes in the form of a DM from one of your Twitter acquaintances: "when did you make this video? its hilarious, cant stop laughing lol [LINK]"

Man charged with threats to Google exec via Twitter

A man accused of threatening a prominent Google executive via Twitter has been arrested and indicted on felony charges by a federal grand jury in San Francisco, court documents show.

Gregory Calvin King, 27, was arrested by the FBI in Texas on Aug. 19 after relocating from Virginia to the San Antonio area, according to media reports in San Antonio.

India wants special monitoring access for Twitter, Facebook

India's communications ministry has been asked by the home ministry to monitor social networking websites such as Twitter and Facebook amid fears that the services are being used by terrorists to plan attacks.

The request suggests that the Indian government is trying to broaden the scope of its online surveillance for national security.

F-Secure Discover Twitter-Controlled Bitcoin Bot

Security firm F-Secure has discovered a bot that compromises Twitter accounts to help in the generation of Bitcoins.

Bitcoin is a decentralized virtual currency that was formed by programmers in 2009, and is generated by programming computers to calculate highly complex math problems. The more computing power you have, the faster you can create Bitcoins; this is why Bitcoin rigs often look like massive sculptures of connected servers.

Twitter not as secure as other sites

The fast-growing microblogging site Twitter has fallen behind some other internet services in introducing tools to help secure the accounts of users, security experts say.

Weaknesses in Twitter's security became apparent on the July 4 Independence holiday as an unknown hacker took control of a Fox News Twitter account and sent out messages falsely claiming that President Barack Obama was dead.

The Secret Service said Monday it will investigate the hacking of Fox's political Twitter account over updates claiming that President Barack Obama had been assassinated.

Secret Service spokesman George Ogilvie says the law enforcement agency whose job it is to protect the president will conduct a probe of the false postings and that "we will conduct the appropriate follow up."

Hackers broke into the FoxNewsPolitics account early Monday, leaving a series of six tweets reporting that Obama had been shot to death in Iowa and the shooter was unknown.

A group broke into a Fox News Twitter account and posted fake news claiming US President Barack Obama has been assassinated.

Mashable reports that the group responsible is called ‘Scriptkiddies.’ It boasted about breaking into @foxnewspolitics. The group then made several tweets on Fox News' account, claiming that Obama had been shot twice at a Ross' restaurant in Iowa by an unnamed shooter.

Chinese Twitter rival, Sina Weibo hit with worm attacks

A popular Twitter-like service in China with 140 million users was hit by a worm earlier this week that resembles past attacks that infected Twitter and MySpace, according to a security analyst.

Sina Weibo, a microblog service in China, said the worm first appeared on Tuesday night. Affected posts displayed a malicious link with enticing messages like "Move a woman's heart with 100 lines of poetry" or "Software to listen to other people's phones." When the link was clicked, the user's own account would repost and send out private messages circulating the malicious link again.

Simon Pegg claims Twitter account hacked - spreads malware to 1.2 million

British comic actor Simon Pegg, star of movies such as "Shaun of the Dead", "Hot Fuzz", and most recently the alien comedy "Paul", has claimed that his Twitter account has been hacked in order to spread malware to his 1.2 million followers.

Simon Pegg normally tweets to his fans with TweetDeck or Twitterific, but the offending message was sent via the Twitter for BlackBerry application instead:
