All flights to have E-mail by 2004

E-mail service will be available on all domestic flights in North America before the end of next year, although services elsewhere in the world will take two to three years to become widespread, according to the chief executive officer of Tenzing Communications, which provides technology and services for in-flight messaging.

L33tdawg: Considering the fact that I'm currently involved in VoIP technology, I can certainly vouch for the fact that call quality has certainly come a long way over the last couple of years. Far enough that with certain VoIP solutions, the call quality is almost on-par with a land line or fixed line.

Researchers build gadget to see through walls

British boffins have developed a radar-based system that can see through walls and behind closed doors.

The system, devised by UK radar research specialist Cambridge Consultants (CCL) uses low-frequency radio pulses to penetrate walls up to 25cm thick. The proof-of-concept device built by CCL scans in the horizontal and vertical planes to build up a picture of objects within a 3D space beyond the wall.

Hybrid gasoline-electric cars have been getting off to a slow start, but in Japan hopes are high that the latest clean machines will outpace the gas guzzlers.

At Toyota's fifth environmental forum in Tokyo, the carmaker is driving home a simple message -- the hybrid is still hot.

"We have continued to pursue development of hybrid technology as a versatile power source, as the core technology for eco-car development," says Toyota Motor Corp president, Fujio Cho.

The University of Liverpool will use a group, or cluster, of Dell Computer servers to tackle its research.

The university's physics department will use the high-performance computing cluster, consisting of 940 Dell PowerEdge servers loaded with Red Hat's Linux operating system, for research in physics.
