O.J. Simpson guilty verdict could lead to malicious spam

Users should be on guard for spam touting the guilty verdict of former professional football star O.J. Simpson, a security company warned today.

"Anytime there's a big news story, spammers latch on to it to get people to click on a link and download their malware," said Sam Masiello, vice president of information security at MX Logic Inc.

BBC customers deluged by spam after hackers break into mailing list

Names and e-mail addresses on a BBC mailing list were exploited by hackers to send "spam", or unwanted e-mail, offering the anti-impotence drugs Viagra and Cialis. Anyone who replied to the sender could have been targeted with scams or computer viruses.

The failing drags the Corporation into the on-going row over how large organisations store private information about individuals. Last night a senior MP called the incident "very serious" and demanded that the BBC take action to tighten its security.

90% of Business E-Mails in the Middle East are Spam

BORED SPAMMERS have reportedly disseminated millions of e-mails accusing random surfers of illegally downloading copyrighted files on Bit Torrent.

The phony e-mails, disguised as a stern message from the anti-piracy company Media Defender, warns the recipient that his or her download activity has been logged. In addition, the message demands an immediate cessation of illegal downloads and threatens criminal prosecution under US federal law.

According to an Australian online newspaper, IT NEWS, the warning was issued by security vendor Sophos, who said the spammers are using the hype around Madonna’s 50th birthday and looming world tour, which kicks off this weekend, as a lure to malware in a new round of malicious spam messages.

India figures among the top 10 spam sending countries, accounting for nearly 3% of spam sent globally in the second quarter of 2008, according to enterprise security firm Secure Computing’s Internet Threats report. Spam or unsolicited e-mails sent from emerging markets is expected to grow as internet infrastructure improves.
