Arbor Networks Offers Virtual Network Security Tool

Arbor Networks, whose technology detects abnormal network traffic flow, now offers its PeakFlow monitoring tool for use in virtualized environments. PeakFlow X Virtual 4.2 is the alternative to PeakFlow X software that monitors packet flow through network routers and switches, alerting system administrators if traffic spikes above normal patterns, such as in the case of a dedicated denial of service (DDOS) attack. The virtual version of the software is designed to run in VMware's ESX and ESXi hypervisors.

Zune Hacking Toolkit tips up

Hackers have developed a toolkit that allows custom applications and games to run on the music-playing gadget.

The OpenZDK toolkit is the first hack to work on the original Zune and Zune HD, developer Glenn Anderson told Wired.

“People can now bypass all of Microsoft’s limitations and develop for the platform,” he said. The toolkit means developers can create or port games to the platform.

Fireshark Plugin Decodes the Malicious Web

A computer security researcher has released a plugin for Firefox that provides a wealth of data on Web sites that may have been compromised with malicious code.

The plugin, called Fireshark, was released on Wednesday at the Black Hat conference. The open-source free tool is designed to address the shortcomings in other programs used to analyze malicious Web sites, said Stephan Chenette, a principal security researcher at Websense, which lets Chenette develop Fireshark in the course of his job.

Microsoft, Adobe, Oracle offer fixes in big Patch Tuesday

Microsoft fixed 25 holes on Tuesday, including critical ones for Windows that could be triggered by browsing to a malicious Web page, while Adobe plugged 15 holes in Reader and Acrobat and launched its new updater service.

Oracle also released its own critical patch update, covering nearly 50 new vulnerability fixes across hundreds of its products, on what was turning out to be an uber Patch Tuesday. Microsoft said customers should deploy all 11 of its security updates, which include five that are critical, as soon as possible.
