Microsoft marked yesterday's launch of the latest version of its web browser with a party at the South by Southwest conference in Austin, Texas.

Yesterday's unveiling of Internet Explorer 9 (IE9) marks the latest update from the three most popular browsers around the world, as they jostle for share of how consumers will view the internet as it moves into the next generation of HTML 5.

A site that aims to get aspiring coders started in the world of programming has been modified to support the Windows Phone 7 platform, allowing on-the-go learning for those without the time to sit at a computer.

Pex4fun, developed by Microsoft Research, is a new, free Windows Phone 7 app which is designed to allow users to write code in C#, F#, and VisualBasic in order to achieve certain goals - with points given out if they're successful.

After three years of development, the open source Drupal 7 content management system debuted earlier this year. Drupal developers aren't resting on their laurels and are now beginning to plan for Drupal 8.

Speaking at that annual DrupalCon conference this week, Drupal founder Dries Buytaert detailed what lessons were learned in the Drupal 7 development process and how those lessons will be applied to Drupal 8. Drupal is among the most popular open source content management systems in use today and is used by Whitehouse.gov, Mozilla and NASA, among others.

IE9 to arrive Monday as Firefox 4 hits RC

Microsoft will release Internet Explorer 9 on 14 March, while Mozilla has signed off on the release candidate for Firefox 4.

The release candidate for IE9 arrived last month, after a series of developer previews, but Microsoft suggested there were "still a few surprises left". "There are a lot of new amazing things to share," said IE senior director Ryan Gavin, in a post on the IE blog. The Monday release coincides with the start of the SXSW festival in Austin, Texas.
