Skype for Android gets video calling

Video chatting has made its way to Skype's Android app, the VoIP provider announced today.

Video is extremely important in the Skype ecosystem. At any given time, there are 30 million concurrent users on Skype, according to Skype vice president and general manager of product and marketing, Neil Stevens. At its peak, Skype sees 500,000 simultaneous video calls across its service.

I was talking last week to my friend HD Moore who founded and leads the development team for Metasploit at Rapid7. He told me about yet another open source project that Rapid7 has been supporting with financial and engineering support. The venerable John-the-Ripper password cracking project has been the receipient of support from Rapid7 for about a year now, culminating in the latest release which was recently announced.

Bad software patches cause critical IT failure

Half of businesses have suffered at least one business critical IT failure as a result of installing a bad software patch, according to GFI Software.

The research also revealed that a quarter of those surveyed suffer recurring IT failures and lost productivity resulting from software bugs and incompatibilities introduced by badly developed software updates.

Google's DOM Snitch helps flag web app vulns

Google has released an experimental extension for its Chrome browser that developers can use to scan their Web applications and flag code that could make them vulnerable to malware attacks.

The free tool, called DOM Snitch, is designed to sniff out potential security holes in Web applications' client-side code that could be exploited by attacks such as client-side scripting, Google said on Tuesday.
