Internet Explorer dominates browser security as Google faces accusations

Internet Explorer 9 should be the go-to browser for organizations concerned about protecting machines from malicious downloads, according to a new study from NSS Labs: Microsoft's browser trounced rivals Chrome, Firefox, and Safari in the security company's more recent malware-blocking tests, a significant win considering that traditional malware remains among the most prevalent threats to users.

EFI Firmware Update brings Lion Internet Recovery to 2010-model Macs

Apple has released three EFI Firmware Updates for 2010-model Macs, including the iMac, MacBook Air, and MacBook Pro. This update enables Lion Internet Recovery on those older Macs. Introduced in OS X Lion alongside the mid-2011 updates to the MacBook Air and Mac mini, Internet Recovery enables access to disk repair or OS X Lion installation options via a broadband internet connection. This is intended for use on a failed hard drive or a blank drive that's never had OS X installed on it.

Apple warns of crackdown on App Store rankings manipulation

Apple has issued a reminder to developers that it will not tolerate use of third party services to manipulate app rankings in the App Store. "When you promote your app, you should avoid using services that advertise or guarantee top placement in App Store charts," the reminder states. "Even if you are not personally engaged in manipulating App Store chart rankings or user reviews, employing services that do so on your behalf may result in the loss of your Apple Developer Program membership."

Joomla! updates close information disclosure holes

Joomla logo Versions 1.7.5 and 2.5.1 of the open source Joomla! content management system (CMS) have been released to address two information disclosure vulnerabilities. These include one medium severity problem in Joomla! 1.7.x that could allow an unauthorised user to gain access to the error log stored on a victim's server, and, in both versions, an inadequate validation problem that could be exploited to gain access to private data. The update to Joomla! 2.5, which arrived last month, also fixes 30 bugs, including one that caused batch processing to break.

CyanogenMod 7 Root Gives Nook Tablet Extra Functionality

The Nook Tablet may be a solid gadget on its own, but tinkerers are obviously itching to have at it. Since its release in November last year, full root attempts include using the "zergRush" method, and some have figured out how to sideload Android apps onto it. So perhaps you'll be pleased to know that the hackers have found a way to run CyanogenMod 7 on the Barnes & Noble tablet.

Source code of Symantec's PcAnywhere released

Hacker group Anonymous claimed late Monday that the source code of Symantec's pcAnywhere had been uploaded on The Pirate Bay site.

Symantec could not immediately comment on whether the hackers had indeed released the source code of its product. "It happened so recently that we're still in the process of analyzing and won't be able to confirm until the morning," a spokesman said via email.
