After three days of talks, networking and learning from the brightest minds in Python programming, PyCon UK culminated with an Raspberry Jam – the coming together of programmers, teachers and 35 children to play, hack and program with the Raspberry Pi and Python.

Education was a very prominent theme at this year’s conference and the Raspberry Jam, sponsored by Bank of America, was proof positive that we can all play a part in the much-needed revolution of the UK’s tired and broken approach to IT education.

Google yanks sketchy iMessage clone for Android from app store

An app that purportedly spoofed a Mac so that Android smartphone and tablet owners could send and receive text-like messages through Apple's iMessage service disappeared today from the Google Play app store.

Google confirmed that it yanked the app for violating its store policies.

Dubbed "iMessage Chat," the app came under quick fire Monday from other app developers who said the program may have been harvesting Apple ID usernames and passwords by passing packets through a China-based server.

New crowdfunding platform targets Drupal development

A new crowdfunding platform – Drupalfund – is intended to make it easier to contribute to Drupal and accelerate development work on the open source content platform, according to Jozef Toth.

Toth, a co-founder of Drupalfund and the CEO of Slovakia-based Web development agency Mogdesign.eu, said that a large portion of Drupal development has been based on individuals and companies donating time and money to the CMS.

BlackBerry messaging service rolls out to Android and iPhone this weekend

Amid rumors of layoffs and a possible sale of the company, BlackBerry today announced some good news: its growing BBM instant messaging service will be available for Android and iPhone devices in the next several days.

BBM is one of the high points of the failing BlackBerry legacy business, with recent growth in BBM users mainly in Europe and Asia. Until now, BBM has only been available for BlackBerry devices.

Mozilla has launched Firefox 24.0 FINAL for Windows, Mac and Linux. There are no major surprises in the final build, with all new and changed features highlighted in the Beta migrating across to the new version.

Two changes that are exclusive to the final version are removed support for the Revocation Lists feature, and the promise of performance improvements when loading new tab pages, attained simply by enabling new tab page preloading as the default behavior.

As a guy who writes about and reviews mobile technology, I use a lot of Android devices. And I've noticed a consistent pattern with what apps I load onto a phone first -- whether it's a personal phone I'm planning to use long-term or a review unit I'm moving into for a few weeks.

Orbit Downloader hacked, turns users into DDoS bots

Denial of service attack capabilities have been found in popular media program Orbit Downloader.

The Windows program integrated into web browsers and was downloaded more than 1.5 million times from website Softpedia and 18,000 times last month alone from rival Softonic. It was still available for download on these sites.

 As the market for smartphones booms globally, there is a developmental focus on well-polished apps. Browsing the Internet is perhaps the biggest allure of a smartphone, and big names on desktop are getting popular on mobile too.

Mozilla’s Firefox might be extremely popular on a computer, though it isn’t as popular on mobile. Sure, the company has the ZTE Open and Firefox OS to deal with, but development for Android is still steaming ahead.
