When Gordon Brown has more free time in the near future to wonder how Labour could have done more to enrich society then the words "open source" ought to figure prominently. Open source – the movement in which people all over the world collaborate to create software to run on computers, mobile phones and other devices – offers hope for the future of the world.

CNN Launches iPhone News / Reporting App

CNN on Tuesday announced an iPhone app, one that will actually charge users to get news from CNN. However, CNN is smart enough to realize that the best model for iPhone apps is a small fee upfront, so they’re charging just a one-time $1.99 fee.

Microsoft Security Essentials Released; Rivals Mock It

Although one of the top consumer security vendors welcomed Microsoft's Security Essentials to the market, another dismissed the new free software as a "poor product" that will "never be up to snuff."

Earlier today, Microsoft launched Security Essentials, its free antivirus and antispyware software suite, which has been in development for almost a year.

Google Wave, a product that promises to revolutionize online communication, will go out to about 100,000 beta testers Wednesday.

The Web application from Google Inc. combines elements of e-mail, chat, Wiki documents, blogs and photo-sharing sites to create a form of Internet communication called a "hosted conversation," or a "wave."

Firefox to introduce Office-esque menu ribbon

Mozilla is taking Firefox down a new (and somewhat unexpected) road in the near future. Among the usual security and performance enhancements, it seems the user interface is due for an overhaul. Most likely starting with the release of the Firefox 3.7 branch, Mozilla is replacing the traditional menu system with a ribbon menu, very similar to the ones present in Office 2007 and other recent Microsoft software.

Not content with pumping out user-friendly desktop installers and theme builders, the prolific Canuck has released another slice of delicious cross-platform cake software: the WebOS Repair Utility. The new Java app is intended as an aid to webOS tinkerers who have modified their devices, allowing you to scan the files on your hacked webOS device and compare them to the pristine versions contained within the official webOS Doctor.

Mozilla released a major update Tuesday to the beta build of its desktop e-mail client Thunderbird, debuting a new search feature, "smart" folders, an activity manager for monitoring communication with your mail server, and better Gmail integration among the list of improvements. Thunderbird 3 beta 4 is available for Windows, Mac, and Linux.
