A plane carrying Sony Online Entertainment President John Smedley has been forced to divert and land ahead of schedule after a hacker group used Twitter to claim it had explosives on board.

The hacker group, known as Lizard Squad, had taken to Twitter to gloat about a successful denial of service-style attack on the Sony PlayStation Network over the weekend. The group taunted Sony, gamers and the FBI with a number of claims including that they were attacking Sony for their corporate greed, and that the hacker group was somehow associated with terrorist organisations.

Sony announced that its upcoming PlayStation Now streaming game service would allow older PlayStation games to run on devices like the new PS4. Now a new rumor claims that Sony is working to allow PS1 and PS2 to run on the PS4 via local software emulation.

The operating system at the heart of Sony's PlayStation 4 is FreeBSD 9.0.

It's been exposed that the operating system powering the PlayStation 4 is Orbis OS, which is a Sony spin of FreeBSD 9.0. It's not a huge surprise FreeBSD is being used over Linux, in part due to the more liberal licensing. The PlayStation 4 is x86_64 based now rather than Cell-based, which makes it easier to use FreeBSD.

When Sony announced its next-generation game console PlayStation 4 back in February, one of the most unique features it talked up was the “Share” button. Right there on the control pad was a button that would instantly begin streaming a live video of whatever the player was doing at the time.
