In a CES panel entitled "Six Wireless Technologies You'll Want to Know," the conversation quickly spun from being an overview of such technologies to how these Wi-Fi and cellular networking were coming together.

AT&T says true 4G is coming in 2013, but will it beat Verizon?

If the rumors are true, real, honest-to-god 4G in the United States could be on the way sometime in the next 7 to 12 months. FierceWireless reports on word from AT&T's annual meeting with analysts that it will be "firing up" new "LTE Advanced" service across its network in the second half of 2013.

What is LTE Advanced? Well, it's a lot like 4G LTE, only more, um, advanced.

Google Fiber is live in Kansas City, real-world speeds at 700 Mbps

After months of fanfare and anticipation, gigabit home Internet service Google Fiber finally went live on Tuesday in Kansas City. The search giant is offering 1 Gbps speeds for just $70 per month—significantly faster and cheaper than what any traditional American ISPs are offering.

"We just got it today and I’ve been stuck in front of my laptop for the last few hours," Mike Demarais, founder of Threedee, told Ars. "It’s unbelievable. I’m probably not going to leave the house."

Uberglobal suffers short DDoS attack

 A distributed denial of service (DDoS) attack targeting one customer has been blamed for a 78 minute degradation of service at hosting firm, Uberglobal yesterday.

The incident was first reported at 11am (AEST) as a “high impact” incident affecting all services, according to Uberglobal’s status advisory.

Finland: Plan for universal 100Mbps service by 2015 on track

Back in 2009, Finland announced what might be the world’s most ambitious national broadband plan: a guaranteed minimum service level of 1Mbps for all homes and companies by 2010. That goal is then planned to be kicked up to 100Mbps, served via a fixed connection or wireless, by 2015 (Google Translate).

China goes from zero to 200 million 3G users in only three years

China's 3G development continues to grow apace, with the number of local users climbing past the 200-million mark as of September this year.

Sina Tech, citing statistics from the country's Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT), reported Wednesday the subscriber base grew from 192.5 million in August to 202.6 million in September.

Over 20Gbps DDoS attacks have become common occurrences

Distributed denial-of-service (DDoS) attacks with an average bandwidth of over 20Gbps have become commonplace this year, according to researchers from from DDoS mitigation vendor Prolexic.

Last year such high-bandwidth attacks were isolated incidents, but attacks that exceed 20Gbps in bandwidth occur frequently now, Prolexic's president Stuart Scholly said Tuesday.
