LEGO Turing Machine Is Simple, Yet Sublime

Two researchers in the Netherlands helmed the construction of a LEGO Turing machine, a quirky manifestation of the classic computer science concept first devised by Alan Turing in 1936.

The device, built by Jereon van den Bos and Davy Landman using a single LEGO Mindstorms NXT set, is one of the most impressive — and simple — attempts we’ve seen at building a physical Turing machine.

Rop Gonggrijp is the founder of the Dutch hacker magazine Hack-Tic and was believed to be a major security threat by authorities in The Netherlands as well as in the USA. In 1993, a number of people surrounding Hack-Tic including Gonggrijp founded XS4ALL. It was the first ISP that offered access to the Internet for private individuals in the Netherlands. Gonggrijp sold the company to the former enemy Dutch-Telecom KPN in 1997 and founded ITSX, a computer security evaluation company.

A Dutch citizen yesterday pled not guilty to charges related to the theft of over 44,000 credit card numbers.

"David Benjamin Schrooten, aka 'Fortezza,' is being targeted by federal prosecutors for allegedly hacking into computers and stealing massive amounts of credit card numbers," writes CNET News' Dara Kerr. "Once he obtained the numbers, he allegedly sold them in bulk quantities via different Web sites. The 44,000 is reportedly from just one sale."

In an international hacking case, a Dutch man appeared in U.S. federal court today and pled not guilty to stealing at least 44,000 credit card numbers, according to the Associated Press. Apparently, this is just the tip of the iceberg. 

David Benjamin Schrooten, aka "Fortezza," is being targeted by federal prosecutors for allegedly hacking into computers and stealing massive amounts of credit card numbers. Will Hackers Pull A "One More Thing" And Release iOS 5.1.1 Jailbreak This Friday?

We told you over the weekend that the untethered jailbreak for iOS devices running iOS 5.1.1 is dropping this week. The hacker who’s been spearheading the upcoming jailbreak, pod2g of the Chronic Dev Team, confirmed that the jailbreak was nearly done and arriving in a “matter of days.”

Coincidentally, the Chronic Dev Team will be presenting at the annual Hack in the Box (HITB) conference this week in Amsterdam, The Netherlands. Since the 5.1.1. jailbreak is expected to drop this week, we’re placing bets on a release this Friday during the team’s keynote.

This year’s Hack-in-the-Box Netherlands security conference takes place next week at the Okura Hotel in Amsterdam, and will be the first ever week-long HITB event. A new iOS jailbreak is expected.

Guesting on IOActive’s blog, the HITB team has produced a detailed commentary on next week’s HITB security conference. It introduces the keynotes and their speakers, such as Bruce Schneier, CISO at BT Counterpane, talking about ‘Trust, Security and Society’; and Andy Ellis, CSO at Akamai, discussing the evolution of Akamai’s security program.
