Megaupload.com founder Kim Dotcom is awaiting extradition to the US after the country requested New Zealand authorities detain him, pending a formal extradition request.
Dotcom, a dual citizen of Germany and Finland who changed his name from Schmitz, was detained on charges of copyright infringement conspiracy, according to Bloomberg.
On Thursday, the US government unsealed a 72-page indictment against Megaupload. The file locker was one of the largest sites on the Web, and major copyright holders had accused it of facilitating widespread copyright infringement. The government argues that Megaupload founder Kim Dotcom and his lieutenants were less a legitimate business than a scheme to profit from the infringing activities of their users.
Last week, after Wikipedia, Reddit and Boing Boing voluntarily blacked out their Web sites to protest proposed antipiracy legislation, hackers began their own blackouts with attacks on dozens of sites across the Internet.
Anonymous- the hacktivist group, recruited unwitting accomplices during their latest cyber attack against the US Department of Justice (DoJ), revealed a prominent security researcher, Graham Cluley, according to whom the group initiated distributed denial of service (DDoS) attack against DoJ in retaliation for a ban on Megaupload.
The FBI website has allegedly become the latest victims of a massive online attack by hacktivists Anonymous.
The group - who go by @YourAnonNews on Twitter - took credit for shutting down the Bureau’s official website FBI.gov, which displays an error message.
L33tdawg: It appears that Anonymous has launched DDoS attacks against mpaa.org, riaa.org, universalmusic.com and justice.gov. All sites are unreachable at the moment.
