The Malaysian government has abandoned consultations with stakeholders over a law to regulate the information technology (IT) industry, telling the private sector to “sort it out among yourself first,” before making any further decision on the matter.

The science, technology and innovation ministry (Mosti) has not amended the controversial draft of the Computing Professionals Bill 2011 (CPB2011) that surfaced in December nor held any meetings with stakeholders after opening the proposed law up to the public for a month ending in mid-January.

Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM)'s computer network in Skudai was disrupted recently after one of its servers was hacked by an unknown source.

The disruption continued for nine hours. Prof Dr Safaai Deris from UTM's Centre of Information and Communication Technology (CICT) said the hacker began penetrating the CICT server on Jan 14.

A US District judge sentenced a Malaysian to 10 years in prison for hacking into the US Federal Reserve and other banks.

Lin Mun Poo, a Malaysian citizen, had admitted earlier this year to hacking into the US central bank, various private financial institutions and possessing stolen bank card and credit card numbers, officials said.

Using a combination of phishing and hijacking handphone numbers, a syndicate siphoned out about a quarter million ringgit from some online banking accounts over the past nine months.

Police learnt just how elaborate the syndicate's modus operandi was only after crippling the gang of cyber crooks with the arrest of six people in a raid on Friday. The suspects aged between 20 and 27 comprised a Sierra Leone national said to be the mastermind, a male Jordanian and a male Pakistani, and four Malaysians, two of whom were women.

According to a report Tuesday by local daily The Straits Times, Malaysian employees from business consultancy firm, The Black Wilder Group (TBWG), stumbled on what H3x4 Crew had done while monitoring the group for an "unrelated case". They saw screenshots of the hacked NParks sited posted on a temporary Web site, which was subsequently removed and uploaded again on kenahack.com, a site that reveals hacking exploits, the article stated.

TBWG said it contacted Singapore's Ministry of Home Affairs after its discovery as it believed confidential data had been leaked.
