Kim Dotcom: Joe Biden behind shutdown

Kim Dotcom says the shutdown of his Megaupload filesharing service was ordered by the White House after Hollywood studio executives met with US Vice President Joe Biden.

The meetings are revealed in publicly released White House logs which show some of the most powerful figures in Hollywood met with studio bosses about six months before the January raids which led to the arrest of Dotcom and three of his Megaupload colleagues.

Italy threatens Apple with potential ban over warranty dispute

Italy's Antitrust Authority is officially taking Apple to task over the company's alleged failure to offer two-year warranties on its products under Italian law. The authority confirmed on Tuesday that it had opened proceedings against Apple, which will potentially face fines of up to $378,000 or even be suspended from selling its products in Italy if the company doesn't meet the criteria for offering a two-year warranty to customers.

Defunct copyright troll Righthaven seeks resurrection

Copyright troll Righthaven, which famously went defunct last year after an epic failure in trying to make money for newspapers by suing sites that reposted even parts of news stories, is seeking a second life.

Righthaven’s former chief executive wants a judge to resurrect the firm in order to appeal a court decision that found it was not infringement for an individual, who had no profit motive, to repost an entire story online.

China's internet wunderkind in the dock over alleged fraud

Chinese internet darling Qihoo 360 Technology has been accused by the research arm of hacktivist group Anonymous of deliberately overstating the volume of traffic to its site in order to attract advertisers, allegations which if true could see it kicked off the New York Stock Exchange.

Qihoo has had a spectacular impact on its domestic market since it broke onto the scene in 2006, and now claims there are over 410 million active users of its AV software and web browser offerings.

TeaMp0isoN's TriCk Pleads Guilty, Faces Jail Time

Junaid Hussain of Birmingham, better known as TriCk, the leader of the TeaMp0isoN collective, has pleaded guilty to hacking into the Gmail account of former UK Prime Minister Tony Blair and to making more than 100 prank calls that targeted the UK's counter-terrorism hotline.

Hussain, who has recently turned 18, faces jail time for making public the information he stole from Tony Blair’s account, including addresses, email addresses and phone numbers, The Sun reports.

Mobile Privacy Standards to Be Discussed at Government Meetings

The National Telecommunications and Information Administration (NTIA) is set to host the first of several meetings seeking input for its effort to develop new codes of conduct for handling private consumer date on the Internet and mobile networks.

The meeting, scheduled for July 12 at the U.S. Department of Commerce building in Washington D.C., is open to all and will focus primarily on mobile application privacy.

Hardware Hacker Sentenced to 3 Years in Prison for Selling Rooted Cable Modems

Cable-modem hacker Ryan Harris has been sentenced to three years in prison for helping users steal internet access in what the authorities say was a $1 million scheme to defraud cable companies of business.

Harris, 28, was sentenced in federal court in Boston on Wednesday.

Telstra password leak breached Privacy Act

The Australian Privacy Commissioner has found Telstra breached the Privacy Act when it exposed thousands of customer records to the public over the internet last year.

Commissioner Timothy Pilgrim said the telco breached National Privacy Principle 2.1 and 4.1 as it “did not take reasonable steps to protect customers' personal information from unauthorised access and disclosure”.
