Korean IT firms boost information security

Though the growth of the Internet has given consumers access to unprecedented amounts of information almost anywhere, thanks additionally to smart devices, it has also raised concerns about the safety of personal data.

A recent attack by hackers against mobile carrier KT, which caused the information of 8.7 million people to be leaked, has companies scrabbling to boost the safety of user information.

South Korean cellphone hackers nabbed in Philippines

Philippine police have arrested eight South Koreans who allegedly hacked into one of the country's biggest telecommunications companies to lower the cost of international cellphone calls for other Koreans in the Philippines.

Police Cyber Crime Division chief Gilbert Sosa said the hackers were rounded up Monday in four raids around metropolitan Manila along with seven Filipino women working for them.

KT Corp., South Korea's No. 2 wireless service provider, apologized on Sunday after personal data of millions of mobile phone subscribers was hacked.

It is the latest in a string of large-scale personal information hacking cases in one of the world's most wired countries.

South Korean paper hit by major cyber attack

A conservative South Korean newspaper said Monday that it had been the victim of a major cyber attack, less than a week after North Korea threatened the paper and other Seoul media over their reports.

Police are investigating Pyongyang's possible involvement in the hacking of the Internet news site and database server at the JoongAng Ilbo and sister paper the Korea JoongAng Daily, the Daily reported.

"North Korea is trying to steal military secrets and cripple our defence information system by using experts specially trained to hack into our military information network," said Defence Security Commander Bae Deuk-Shik, at a security forum. 

He said the North has tried to "stir up social disorder by paralysing our core infrastructure through cyber terror as it can cause enormous damage in a short period."

Should US Worry About North Korea's Cyber Attack Capability?

The United States should worry more about North Korea's cyber attack capabilities than its nuclear arsenel, if the latest reports are any indication.

A Bloomberg report that cited Army General James Thurman, commander of US Forces in Korea, said Pyongyang has roped in hackers who possess cyber inflitration capabilities. "North Korea employs sophisticated computer hackers trained to launch cyber infiltration and cyber attacks," Thurman was quoted as saying.

A political scandal is brewing in Korea over alleged denial of service attacks against the National Election Commission (NEC) website.

Police have arrested the 27-year-old personal assistant of ruling Grand National Party politician Choi Gu-sik over the alleged cyber-assault, which disrupted a Seoul mayoral by-election back in October.

South Korean spy agency admits hacking Gmail

South Korea's national spy agency has admitted that it monitored a Google Inc.'s Gmail account of a citizen accused of violating the national security law, a local newspaper reported Friday.

The National Intelligence Service (NIS) received a court approval to monitor the Gmail account of Kim Hyung-geun, 52, to collect email evidences regarding his allegedly pro-North Korean activities, the Hankyoreh daily reported, citing a document filed with the Constitutional Court.
