South Korean nuclear reactors hit by cyber attack

South Korea's nuclear power operator said on Sunday that cyber attacks on non-critical operations at the company's headquarters are still continuing, a week after executives revealed that the organisation's systems had been hit.

The Korea Hydro & Nuclear Power Co said on Monday last week that its internal systems had been hacked but only non-critical data had been stolen, and operations were not at risk.

US Army warns of database breaches in South Korea

The U.S. Army warned Thursday that databases holding information on 16,000 South Korean civilian employees of the U.S. military and applicants for base jobs may have been compromised.

The military became aware on May 28 that the Korean National Recruitment System may have been breached, according to a letter addressed to Korean employees signed by Gen. Curtis M. Scaparrotti, head of U.S. Forces Korea (USFK).

Android botnet stole SMSes from South Korea, emailed them to China

An Android botnet found in South Korea that steals text messages may be one of the largest and most advanced mobile malware operations discovered, according to security vendor FireEye.

The botnet, which FireEye called “MisoSMS,” was used in 64 spyware campaigns, stealing text messages from phones in Korea and forwarding them to email accounts accessed by hackers in both China and South Korea.

Hacker 'mercenaries' spy on Japan, South Korea

A small, sophisticated international hacking group was responsible for a widely publicised 2011 spying attack on members of Japan's parliament as well as dozens of previously undisclosed breaches at government agencies and strategic companies in Japan and South Korea, security researchers said.

Researchers at Kaspersky Lab believe they have found a squad of hackers for hire, who contract out to governments and possibly businesses, in contrast to recent reports on hacks said to be carried out by full-time government employees.

S. Korea IT company probed for assisting North's cyberattacks

South Korean prosecutors said it is investigating an information technology company over allegations it helped North Korean hackers attack the country's computer networks.

According to The Korea Times on Wednesday, the Seoul Supreme Prosecutors' Office said its officials and agents of the National Intelligence Service (NIS) on Tuesday raided the firm's office and the house of its president known as Kim. The firm's name was not revealed, though.

Hackers steal South Korea military secrets

A mysterious group of computer hackers has spent four years spying on the South Korea military, US security software maker McAfee has said, citing evidence uncovered from malicious software samples.

The findings, which were not confirmed by authorities in Seoul, provide one possible motive for ongoing attacks on South Korea that date to 2009.
