Google delivers 'disavow links' tool to help combat link spam

 Google launched a new tool today that allows Webmasters to eliminate links to their site that they believe might be hurting its search rankings.

Announced at the Pubcon conference in Las Vegas today, the "disavow links" tool is designed to help sites that have already been warned by Google of manual spam actions based on "unnatural links." The tool is recommended as a last-resort solution to link spam -- disreputable or irrelevant links that may hurt a site's search engine results ranking.

China's internet wunderkind in the dock over alleged fraud

Chinese internet darling Qihoo 360 Technology has been accused by the research arm of hacktivist group Anonymous of deliberately overstating the volume of traffic to its site in order to attract advertisers, allegations which if true could see it kicked off the New York Stock Exchange.

Qihoo has had a spectacular impact on its domestic market since it broke onto the scene in 2006, and now claims there are over 410 million active users of its AV software and web browser offerings.

FBI issues warning about using hotel Internet connections

The FBI today warned travelers there has been an uptick in malicious software infecting laptops and other devices linked to hotel Internet connections.

The FBI wasn't specific about any particular hotel chain, nor the software involved but stated: "Recent analysis from the FBI and other government agencies demonstrates that malicious actors are targeting travelers abroad through pop-up windows while they are establishing an Internet connection in their hotel rooms. 

Google begins penalizing search 'over-optimization'

Google is making a change to its search algorithm to penalize what the company's head of Web spam called "over-optimization" and instead favor websites with high-quality content and less refined search-engine optimization. 

Google announced Tuesday that a change in its search algorithm will punish sites that violate the company's "existing quality guidelines" and is intended to reward those "making great sites for users, not just algorithms." The change will go live over the next few days, the company said.
