Intel open sources multicore development tool

Intel on Tuesday is scheduled to release the source code to a development tool for writing applications to run on multicore chips.

The company released Threading Building Blocks last August, a C++ template designed to simplify the job of writing applications that take advantage of processors with multiple cores, or processing units.

Addressing demand for even faster notebook computers, Intel Corp. said Monday it has begun shipping its first Intel Core 2 Extreme mobile dual-core processor and expects to announce battery-friendly quad-core processors for notebooks next year.

Intel joins One Laptop Per Child initiative

The OLPC got a major boost today with the announcement that Intel has joined the organization and will serve on its board of directors. No doubt, Intel wouldn't mind seeing the OLPC's low-cost Linux laptop's AMD Geode processor replaced by one of its own chips.

More specifically, Intel said it expects to "explore collaborations involving technology and educational content."

Intel buys into VMware

Intel and VMware announced today that Intel Capital is taking a $218.5 million stake in virtualization company VMWare. Intel will purchase 9.5 million Class A shares at $23 per share, which, at the completion of VMware's forthcoming IPO, will give Intel about a 2.5 percent stake in the company. Because VMware's stock is split between Class A shares, which have less voting power, and Class B shares, Intel won't control that many votes in the company, but they will get a board seat.

Intel invests in UK chip-design firm

Intel has invested $10m (£5m) in UK chip-design company Mirics Semiconductor.

Mirics, based in Hampshire, has developed radio-frequency chips that allow mobiles and PCs to receive content based on any number of technical standards being used globally.

Intel will give the UK company management and technical advice, and introduce Mirics to potential investors.

Intel shows off anti-cheating tech for online games

During the Research@Intel day on Wednesday, the processor giant showcased a new anti-cheat technology currently under development, which apparently can detect common cheats like aimbots and wall hacks, and then alert other gamers not to enter into sessions with that particular player.

Intel is poised to take on VIA?s mini ITX motherboards with its upcoming Little Valley D201GLY, which is part of its Intel Desktop Board Essential Series. The new D201GLY is the first Intel branded motherboard to feature a SiS chipset. Intel previously used ATI chipsets in its D103GGV and D102GGC2 budget motherboards, however, Intel kicked ATI to the curb after the acquisition by AMD.

Intel gears up for Santa Rosa Centrino launch

Intel is readying itself for the launch of the latest overhaul of its Centrino laptop platform - codenamed Santa Rosa - today, in a move the chipmaker hopes will keep it at the top of the fastest-growing segment of the personal computer market.

The company's new product is not a processor but is instead a platform - a whole package of components including the main processor as well as all the secondary chips that add features such as the ability to connect to a wireless network.

Intel red faced after WiMAX demo fails

Intel used its Developer Forum in Beijing to name the date it would be introducing WiMax in notebooks: by the end of June 2008. But it was embarrassed during a keynote when it couldn't actually get the technology to work.

Intel's Senior Vice President David Perlmutter (above, right) was left red-faced after a live demo of WiMax technology in front of the world media failed just seconds into a wireless video streaming exercise.

Intel Preps Next Generation vPro

Intel is preparing its next generation of the vPro platform, codename "Weybridge," for release in the second half of this year, featuring improved security and management capabilities.

vPro is for the corporate customer as Centrino is for mobile and Viiv is for the consumer. While vPro technology has hardly become a household name, analyst Roger Kay reasons that's because it's sold to business
