India becomes the first Asian country to reach Mars

Mars has become the destination of choice for ambitious space agencies and nations, and now India is among that group. After a successful maneuver, the Mars Orbiter Mission (MOM) has entered an orbit about 420 km above the surface of Mars (MOM is informally called Mangalyaan, which is Hindi for Mars vehicle). It will soon begin to photograph the planet’s surface and analyze the atmospheric composition.

Indian hackers deface Pakistani sites in response to cyberattacks

Over 2,000 websites from India and Pakistan have been defaced so far in the past two days, as hackers from both countries duke it out in cyberspace.

More than 100 Pakistani websites were defaced on Wednesday, apparently in retaliation for the defacement of more than 2,000 Indian websites by Pakistani hackers on Republic Day, according to The Hindu.

Worried about snooping, India won’t partner with Google for elections

The Commission Election of India (CEI) has decided not to select Google as a partner to create an online voter registration tool that would also provide information about voting locations and card numbers.

“Google made a presentation to the Commission for electoral look up services for citizens... However, after due consideration, the Commission has decided not to pursue the proposal any further,” wrote Dhirendra Ojha, the director of the commission, in a statement on Thursday.

Indian government to introduce 'total internet surveillance' system

The Indian government is planning to launch a surveillance system to spy on and record all internet traffic in India, including emails, blog posts, social media, voice calls and other communications, along with relevant IP addresses.

In addition to the privacy implications, the system will also have consequences for organisations doing business in India, especially high-tech companies with valuable intellectual property that could be exposed. The objective of scooping up 100 per cent of internet traffic in India could also impact web performance.

Utility cuts IT workforce, hires Indian outsourcers

Northeast Utilities in Connecticut Tuesday confirmed that it plans to turn over part of its IT operations to two India-based outsourcing firms, despite a recent push by state lawmakers to keep it from doing so.

NU says it employs some 400 IT workers, and "will retain about half of those employees" after turning some operations over to outsourcers Infosys and Tata Consultancy Services, two of India's largest IT firms.

Symantec slashes Aussie IT jobs, offshores to India

Security software vendor Symantec has sacked its Australian tech support team and outsourced the positions to India, as part of a global restructuring campaign.

Symantec announced a company-wide “organisational simplification initiative” in January, emphasising at the time it would be reducing executive and middle management positions, and reorganising its sales department.

Indian watchdog investigates breach in $45mil ATM heist

The Indian government's cyber watchdog is investigating how security at two companies that are part of India's vast IT services industry was breached in a global ATM heist that saw US$45 million stolen from two banks in the Middle East.

EnStage Inc, which operates from Bangalore, and ElectraCard Services, based in Pune, processed card payments for the two banks that were hit in the theft, several people familiar with the situation said.
