HP confirms breakup, layoffs hit an entire Google’s worth of employees

HP today confirmed yesterday's report that it plans to split itself into two companies, one for PCs and printers and another for business technology and services. HP also said its layoffs, which are already in full swing, will affect 55,000 people by the time they're done. For comparison's sake, Google's entire employee base is 47,756.

Hewlett-Packard CEO Meg Whitman in March said watching 3D print projects complete was like "watching ice melt," that quality was lax and that her company "solved both of those problems."

Whitman's riff on 3D printing was in response to a shareholder question at HP's annual meeting. Off script, Whitman said there would be an announcement in June about HP's 3D printing plans, which would address the enterprise market first.

HP reports higher profit but will slash up to 16,000 more jobs

Hewlett-Packard reported increased profits Thursday as its PC business turned in a strong quarter, but the company will slash thousands more jobs to reduce costs.

HP has already cut 34,000 jobs as part of a plan announced two years ago to boost profits. It will now cut an additional 11,000 to 16,000 jobs to make its workforce "more competitive," it said.

Hewlett Packard has unveiled a new mobile app that retailers can use to stalk people as they shop in order to send them targeted adverts and promotions.

The iOS app, dubbed SmartShopper and unveiled at the Interop conference in Las Vegas today, has the ability to send location-based smartphone offers to customer’s iPhones in real time.

HP to Seek $4 Billion in Damages From Oracle Over Itanium

Hewlett-Packard and Oracle are beginning to outline the arguments they’ll be presenting next month when a jury trial starts in the second phase of their court dispute over Intel’s Itanium platform.

In a hearing earlier this month, HP officials indicated they planned to seek damages from Oracle of $4 billion or more, saying the software giant damaged its high-end server business when Oracle officials announced in 2011 that the company would no longer support the Itanium platform, saying that Intel was planning to end the chip line.

HP sued by Chubby Checker over webOS penis size app

A Florida personal injury lawyer has filed a Federal lawsuit against Hewlett-Packard on behalf of rock and roll icon Ernest Evans, better known as Chubby Checker, over an app developed for webOS that "adversely affects Chubby Checker's brand and value and if allowed to continue, will cause serious damage to the Plaintiff's goodwill and will tarnish his image that he has worked to maintain over the last 50 years." That app, called the "Chubby Checker," allows users to enter a man's shoe size to estimate the size of his penis. Evans' attorney is seeking half a billion dollars in damages.

HP To Adopt Android For Upcoming Mobile Devices

Having failed to carve out a place for itself in the post-PC era, Hewlett-Packard is now taking drastic measures — by adopting Google’s Android operating system to run a series of upcoming mobile devices.

It’s a bit of a Hail Mary pass for HP, which has fallen years behind its rivals in the mobile space. It’s also a big win for Google, which adds another powerful partner to the Android ecosystem.
