Human societies run on trust.  Every day, we all trust millions of people, organizations, and systems — and we do it so easily that we barely notice.  But in any system of trust, there is an alternative, parasitic, strategy that involves abusing that trust.  Making sure those defectors don’t destroy the very cooperative systems they’re abusing is an age-old problem, and we’ve developed a variety of societal pressures to induce cooperation: moral systems, reputational systems, institutional systems, and security systems.

Will Hackers Pull A "One More Thing" And Release iOS 5.1.1 Jailbreak This Friday?

We told you over the weekend that the untethered jailbreak for iOS devices running iOS 5.1.1 is dropping this week. The hacker who’s been spearheading the upcoming jailbreak, pod2g of the Chronic Dev Team, confirmed that the jailbreak was nearly done and arriving in a “matter of days.”

Coincidentally, the Chronic Dev Team will be presenting at the annual Hack in the Box (HITB) conference this week in Amsterdam, The Netherlands. Since the 5.1.1. jailbreak is expected to drop this week, we’re placing bets on a release this Friday during the team’s keynote.

This year’s Hack-in-the-Box Netherlands security conference takes place next week at the Okura Hotel in Amsterdam, and will be the first ever week-long HITB event. A new iOS jailbreak is expected.

Guesting on IOActive’s blog, the HITB team has produced a detailed commentary on next week’s HITB security conference. It introduces the keynotes and their speakers, such as Bruce Schneier, CISO at BT Counterpane, talking about ‘Trust, Security and Society’; and Andy Ellis, CSO at Akamai, discussing the evolution of Akamai’s security program.
