The Amsterdam district court ruled two weeks ago that the KaZaa P2P program is acting unlawfully by making software available that allows users to download music files and must shut down. Okay - time to ask for some favours. A mate of mine (myself included), is developing a new music based site for musicians and audio enthusiasts -- it's going to be like a community thingy with hardware reviews and gear guides etc etc etc. The point of the matter is that he can't seem to pick a name. Lets call this portable the second smallest MP3 player on the market. Digital Global Network's new MPIO-DMK Keychain portable is bested by Panasonic's SV-SD80 by a few sixteenths of an inch and weighs 29 ounces versus the SV-SD80's 26.1 ounces. Despite just missing the title of World's Smallest, the MPIO-DMK does better the Panasonic in one area. It has double the memory with 128MB.

One thing about PressPlay launching its service after MusicNet had launched theirs. They get to see first hand the reaction its competitor garners by users with the rules, costs, and limitations imposed by the record labels new services. This means they are able to change anything that flops before their own service goes live. There is a lot that needs to be changed.

The Rio Volt SP250 bookends the original Rio Volt SP100 on the higher end of the price range, the basic SP90 being the new starter model. It's identical in size and shape to that excellent player - all three share the same platform - but the SP250 has several improvements that updates and improves the usability of portable MP3/CD players in general.

Call it the Imbruglia imbroglio.

The latest CD from Natalie Imbruglia, the coquettish Australian pop star, won't play in some CD and DVD players because of copy protection technology included on the disc. That has prompted a spate of complaints to Imbruglia's record label, Bertelsmann Music Group, which has set up a toll-free phone hotline to deal with the fallout over the CD "White Lilies Island," released Nov. 5 in Europe.
