Australia central bank targeted by hackers

Australia's central bank has been targeted by sophisticated hackers seeking sensitive information which included Group of 20 negotiations, but a bank spokesperson said nothing was stolen.

The Reserve Bank of Australia (RBA) would not comment on a media report that the malware computer virus used in the attack was Chinese in origin.

DARPA says goodbye to hacker-friendly Cyber Fast Track program

 The Department of Defense is pulling the plug on Cyber Fast Track, a program aimed at tapping reformed hackers and other security hotshots to solve cyber-defense problems quickly.

Looking to circumvent the typical onerous, long-term process of funding grants, the US Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) used the program to improve the government’s ability to keep up with fast-moving bad actors on the cybercriminal stage.

Google extends travel and conference grant for female scientists attending #HITB2013AMS

As part of Google's ongoing commitment to encourage women to excel in computing and technology, Google is once again offering two female computer scientists passes to next month's HITB Security Conference in Amsterdam.

The Google EMEA Travel and Conference Grant offers winners:

  •     Free registration for the conference (10th and 11th April worth EUR1299)
  •     Up to 1000 EUR towards travel costs

Remember Wildan Yani Ashari? The hacker who defaced the Indonesian president’s site in January. Instead of the disproportional jail time that Wildan would face, the national police hinted yesterday that they might use Wildan’s help inside the police cyber crime unit. The new year is barely two months old and it's already been a brutal one for the disclosure of new vulnerabilities. Java, Adobe Reader, Flash, Google Chrome and a number of other widely deployed applications have all been hit with a slew of serious bugs in just the last few weeks. And that's likely to get worse this week as researchers convene in Vancouver for the Pwn2Own and Pwnium hacking contests.
