The Nexus 5 isn't pure Android, it's pure Google

In this, the fifth year of Android's existence, we also have seen the release of the fifth Nexus phone — appropriately enough called the Nexus 5. Meanwhile, it's been two years since we saw the release of Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich — and since then we've only seen "point" updates, up to and including the latest, Android 4.4 KitKat.

American woman fined for wearing Google Glass while driving

 A Los Angeles woman was fined after she was caught wearing Google Glass behind the wheel.

Cecilia Abadie was stopped by an officer in the San Diego area of California who issued a ticket for "driving with a monitor visible to driver (Google Glass)."

The device allegedly violated California's Vehicle Code Section 27602 which states a person cannot drive with a video screen visible to the driver. However, exceptions to the law include the use of a GPS or tracking equipment, in which Google Glass could be included.

Coast Guard spills the beans on Google's mystery barges

The U.S. Coast Guard has given up what could be a key clue in the tale of two mysterious barges moored on either side of the country.

After repeatedly declining to comment about the barges, which appear to be carrying structures made of shipping crates and are docked in the harbors in both San Francisco and Portland, Me., a Coast Guard spokesman divulged some information today, according to a CNBC.com report.

NSA, UK hacked Yahoo! and Google data center interconnects - report

British and US intelligence agencies managed to tap into the connections between data centers run by Yahoo! and Google, and in one month this year slurped 181,280,466 records, including metadata and the contents of communications, according to new documents from Edward Snowden.

A report dated January 9, 2013, from NSA’s acquisitions directorate, detailed the operation, dubbed MUSCULAR, in which operatives from the NSA and Britain's GCHQ tapped the fiber-optic transmission cables from the non-US data centers run by the two firms.

Chinese hackers miss Google network, but the checks go on

Eric Schmidt, Google's executive chairman, put a question to an audience Gartner's Symposium ITxpo here on Monday. "Raise [your] hand if you're sure the Chinese are not inside your corporate network."

Many of the 8,500 attendees were in the hall to hear the question, but only five hands were raised. "Congratulations," Schmidt said from the stage.

Google acquiring gesture recognition tech startup Flutter

Google has bought a startup that produces gesture recognition technology that controls popular apps via webcam.

Flutter, a San Francisco-based startup backed by the likes of Andreessen Horowitz and Y Combinator, launched approximately 18 months ago to develop gesture recognition technology for Mac and Windows apps.

Some of the apps that can be controlled by Flutter's solutions include YouTube, Pandora, Grooveshark, and Netflix. With Google as the new owner, presumably some sort of Android and/or Chrome support is on the agenda.

France close to fining Google over data privacy concerns

 France's data protection watchdog moved closer to fining Google for the way it stores and tracks user information after the search engine ignored a three-month ultimatum to bring its practices in line with local law.

The privacy watchdog, known as CNIL, said on Friday it was opening a procedure to impose formal sanctions. Under French law, Google can be fined up to 150,000 euros.
