Dropbox used for convincing phishing attack

Dropbox's file storage service was used for a tricky phishing attack, although the service was quick to shut down it down, according to Symantec.

The security vendor said it detected a batch of phishing emails advising recipients that they've been sent a large file and included a link to Dropbox-hosted page.

A remote access trojan (RAT) is using Dropbox for command and control in a targeted attack against the Taiwanese Government, malware analyst Maersk Menrige says.

The upgraded PlugX RAT is the first targeted attack to use Dropbox to update command and control settings, Menrige said, as distinct from other malware and ransomware which used the popular cloud storage platform to fling malicious files at victims.

For years now, Internet users have gotten used to the risk of having files and content they share through various online services be subject to takedown requests based on the Digital Millennium Copyright Act (DMCA) and/or content-matching algorithms. But users have also gotten used to using services like Dropbox as their own private, cloud-based file storage and sharing systems, facilitating direct person-to-person file transfer without having to worry about such issues.

The popular Dropbox cloud storage and file sharing site went down Friday night with some issues lingering into Saturday. The San Francisco company acknowledged the service disruption on its tech blog, but disputed claims that it was taken down by hackers and attributed the issues to a maintenance issue.

Why has Dropbox been opening links in uploaded documents?

That question surfaced Thursday after a security researcher found that links inside documents that he uploaded to the file-sharing service had been accessed. "I had the opportunity recently to beta-test HoneyDocs.com, a Web app that generates documents that can 'buzz home,'" wrote Daniel McCauley Thursday on WNC InfoSec Blog. "This is done by a unique embedded GET request that is initiated when the generated document has been opened."

Dropbox goes down for more than an hour

Cloud storage service Dropbox users were hit with a widespread service outage this morning that lasted a little more than an hour.

Tweets from outraged users around the world appeared to show the breadth of the service outage.

According to the web monitoring site Is It Down Right Now, Dropbox's servers were unresponsive at 6:32 a.m. Pacific Time and appeared to be down for a little more than an hour. During that time, the Dropbox website was displaying 404 server error messages.
