Cisco issues advisories for security flaws in appliances and mobility mobility tools

Cisco has released three security updates to address a number of flaws in its products.

The company said that the update would apply to customers running the ASA 5500 security appliances as well as firms which use the Application Control Engine platform and the AnyConnect Mobility Client.

Cisco apparently in talks to buy NDS for $5 billion

Israeli-based NDS, which develops software for multichannel television networks is apparently in advanced talks with Cisco Systems to be acquired for a mind-boggling $5 billion. 

Founded in 1988 and headquartered in London, NDS is owned in part by News Corp (51%) and Permira private equity fund (49%). The deal's value is apparently 35% higher than what NDS was valued at when it delisted from the stock exchange in 2009 according to a report by Israel's Calcalist financial newspaper. 

Cisco updates security certs

Cisco this week updated its CCNA and CCNP Security certifications to keep certificates up-to-date on new security products and best practices. The updated training addresses new trends in the workplace, such as the bring-your-own-device phenomenon as well as mobility, cloud computing and virtualization.

Cisco To Embed Security Into Every Network Device

Cisco (NSDQ:CSCO) believes the network is where corporate security begins and ends and plans to build defenses against hackers and cybercriminals across its portfolio of networking gear, the vendor's new security executive said.

Chris Young, Cisco's first senior vice president responsible for the company's security strategy, spoke at the Cisco Media Day, held at a San Francisco hotel a few blocks away from the RSA Conference.

Cisco issues burning server warning

IT giant Cisco has warned customers that certain blade servers that it sells as part of Unified Computing System data centre platform are prone to overheating and emitting a "short flash" in the event of a transistor failure.

"A failure has been observed where a MOSFET [metal–oxide–semiconductor field-effect transistor] power transistor failed in a manner that caused the MOSFET to overheat and emit a flash before failing," the company revealed in a field notice.
