Apple rolls out two-step verification for iCloud.com Web apps

Apple on Monday appears to have rolled out a new implementation of its two-factor Apple ID authentication system with iCloud.com, requiring users who have the additional layer of security enabled to enter a special code before accessing the Web apps.

With the new implementation, shown in the screenshot above, Apple is expanding its two-step authentication security feature beyond Apple ID management and iCloud-connected features to the iCloud.com Web app suite. Prior to the change, iCloud.com was accessible via a simple password. The feature was first spotted by reader Stephan.

Of the many announcements made at Apple’s recent Worldwide Developers Conference, one that did not garner as much attention concerned the pre-installed weather app on the iPhone.

The look, feel and data has been provided to Apple by Yahoo for many years, part of a deal that sends a lot of traffic back to the Internet portal and spurs a multitude of downloads of its own handsome weather app. So attractive, in fact, that the refurbishment of it was much touted by CEO Marissa Mayer and was well received by reviewers and users. The kudos were much deserved.

Russian hackers involved in Apple device hijacking and ransom arrested by police

Russian police on Tuesday said they arrested two hackers supposedly responsible for "hijacking" Apple products via Find My iPhone, locking owners out until they pay a ransom to regain access.

According to a statement from Directorate K, the Russian Interior Ministry's cyber crime arm, the alleged hackers could face up to two years in jail if found guilty of perpetrating the hijackings, reports Re/code.

Apple has a new programming language, Swift, intended to provide modern programming capabilities for Apple application development and streamline the building of applications.

Featured as part of the Xcode 6 IDE (now in a beta release) and introduced this morning, Swift is a language for the Cocoa and Cocoa Touch frameworks for OS X and iOS.
