Macs in the Enterprise: the Cost Factor

At A&E Television Networks, employees have to make a compelling case to get a Mac. More often than not, they're denied. That's because the high cost of a Mac is downright hard to justify, especially in these tough times.

"You can buy a PC for $400, while the cheapest Mac is over a thousand," says Jon Graff, director of IT operations at A&E. "In the real world, you're spending a lot more on a Mac. People really need to show why they can't get their work done on a PC."

I don't know what this is and I don't care. It may be a MacBook Mini concept. Or a crazy leak. Or just a perfect fake. Whatever it is, it's beautiful. I want one badly.

According to a 9to5 reader, this perfect rendering, photoshop, or whatever the hell it is came inside a Russian magazine. My knowledge of Russian doesn't go beyond "hey, wanna dance?", "cheers," and "you have beautiful blue eyes, let's go back to mine" so I don't have a clue about what this page is saying. If you speak the language of Dostoyevsky, drop me a line because I want to know.

JavaScript to get 3x speed boost in iPhone OS 3.0

Early JavaScript benchmarks from iPhones running a beta of iPhone OS 3.0 suggest the new version will bring big speed gains to web apps running in Mobile Safari, even on existing iPhone hardware. With an average 3x speed improvement, some individual benchmarks reveal as much as an 16x increase in execution speed over the existing version of Mobile Safari in iPhone OS 2.2.

Apple patent filing speaks of stealth biometric security on iPhone

Recent patent fillings by Apple that AppleInsider has dug up point to the company adding several new methods of insuring the security of its devices for users. The new filings cite biometric authentication methods that would excite Ethan Hunt -- including installation of a hidden sensor behind the screen that would recognize the user's fingerprint when touched, and / or a front-facing camera for retinal recognition.

Apple announced on Thursday that its annual Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC will be held on June 8 through 12, as expected.

As it has been since 2003, WWDC will be held at San Francisco's Moscone Center and will feature educational opportunities covering Mac and iPhone development and IT-related integration and technologies.

Apple posts fix for 17-inch MacBook Pro's visual glitche

Addressing widespread reports of visual artifacts on the 17-inch MacBook Pro's display, Apple on Wednesday night released a firmware update that it hoped would clear up the issues for its premium notebook.

MacBook Pro Graphics Firmware Update 1.0 (770KB) specifically tackles "vertical lines or distorted graphics" that can appear on the unibody portable's screen during regular use.

SIM-free iPhone for sale online

SIM-free iPhones are now available to buy in the UK on the Play.com website.

Though the site says the item is currently out of stock, it is taking orders and promises to send the SIM-free iPhone to buyers as soon as it is back in stock. The price is steep, though, at £599.99 for the 16GB version. However, Play.com claims this is a discount on the RRP which is £649.99.

"It is not unlocked from a UK or European network and is available due to EU legislation ensuring the sale of SIM-free mobile phones," the product details of the item read.
