The cat and mouse game between Apple continues... George Hotz aka geohot, creator of blackra1n and the original iPhone jailbreaker/unlocker (before the days of the iPhone Dev Team) has made an announcement that he has successfully unlocked the latest 'unjailbreakable' baseband aka 05.11.07. Palm Pre evicted from iTunes (yet again)

Apple's Thursday update to iTunes - version 9.0.2 - yet again kicks the Palm Pre off Cupertino's media-sync reservation.

At least that's the word from pre|central.net. Palm did not immediiately respond to our request for confirmation, but considering the long and contentious will-sync/won't-sync back-and-forth between Palm and Apple, we see little reason to doubt that Palm's webOS 1.2.1 fix of early this month has indeed been unfixed.

Apple's new 27-inch iMac and its 16-by-9 ratio screen is currently incompatible with devices not equipped with a Mini DisplayPort, limiting its capabilities as an external display.

In a follow-up to its teardown of the 27-inch iMac last week, iFixit said it revisited the new hardware to see if it could display high-definition video from an external source. The solutions provider said their test came up short with third-party hardware via an adapter.

The adventures of the FrankenMac

Darkness crept over the land, and a feeling of fear filled the people hearts as the FrankenMac was born. Yes, that’s right- ordinary PC laptops and desktops are changing into Macs and some crafty geeks are building their own out of generic parts; much like the monsters in the story by Mary Shelley.

Study suggests $600 mass-market sweet spot for Apple tablet

While most Mac users would have no problem paying more than $600 for Apple's long-rumored tablet, most PC users would not consider hardware above that price, a new study suggests.

In a survey of 753 customers, Retrevo.com found that 64 percent of PC users accustomed to low-cost machines would only buy the Apple tablet if it costs less than $600. But 27 percent of Mac users would pay between $600 and $800, and 41 percent said they would spend more than $800 on the still-unseen hardware.

Try as It Might, Apple Can't Keep Its Secrets

Apple's obsession with secrecy is well-established, and there is quite a cottage industry of bloggers and Apple Web sites dedicated to exposing their secrets. One of the more impressive efforts came during the iPhone 3GS launch, where one site was tracking a shipping vessel from China believed to be carrying the phones. The site even had the manifest.

But other times, all you need is a little carelessness. Case in point: the folks who gave away Apple's upcoming tablet and new MacBooks. In the case of the MacBooks, it was Apple that did it.

You can't have too many backups for Mac hard drives

I've written in this column about the importance of having a good, reliable backup of your computer's data. Of course, you know it's a good idea, but backing up is like flossing: you know you should be doing it regularly, but something more important or interesting to do often comes up instead. And besides, your data won't get lost, right? That happens to other people.

ust days after its unveiling, Apple's newest Mac desktop hardware has been disassembled, revealing the tightly-packed innards of the 27-inch iMac hidden behind its 11-pound screen.

The new 27-inch iMac features a large 2560 by 1440 pixel LED-backlit display. The model disassembled by iFixit sports a 3.06GHz Core 2 Duo processor. The high-end model can be outfitted with a quad-core processor i5 or i7 processor, which uses a different socket.

If you were to choose between paying for a computer operating system and getting it for free on condition that you have to sit through various advertisements all day long, what would you get? Apple seems to be interested in developing such an OS as the Cupertino-based company has filed for a free ad-supported OS patent.
