Apple’s long-time hardware lead steps down to work on mysterious “new project”

Apple announced Tuesday that its longtime SVP of hardware engineering, Dan Riccio, will depart his current role and assume a new one focused entirely on a "new project." Riccio had led hardware engineering since 2012. Prior to that role, he led iPad hardware engineering. He will report directly to CEO Tim Cook in his new role.

Apple on Tuesday released a new iOS software update that includes fixes for three security weaknesses in the former version.

The company said on its support website that it is aware of the three security bugs and that they "may have been actively exploited." The company also said it does not disclose details regarding security issues "until an investigation has occurred."

New MacBook Pro models will arrive this year with MagSafe, M1 successor

According to a report in Bloomberg, Apple plans to launch new versions of its MacBook Pro laptops "around the middle of the year," and these machines will feature speed and display enhancements, as well as a return of the MagSafe charging design seen in MacBook computers several generations ago.

Citing "a person with knowledge of the plans," the Bloomberg story claims that Apple's 13-inch MacBook Pro will get a 14-inch successor, just as the 15-inch MacBook Pro became a 16-inch model when the screen bezel was reduced to allow more screen real estate in a similarly sized chassis.

Apple allegedly working with Hyundai on electric car for 2027

Apple's automotive plan includes a collaboration with Hyundai, according to a report published on Friday by the Korea Economic Daily. It says that Apple and Hyundai are working on battery technology that will differ from the kind used in the automaker's new battery electric vehicle platform, which goes into production later this year. The report also claims that the Apple car will arrive in 2027 but offers no more detail about the collaboration or any possible vehicles or technologies that could emerge as a result.

According to Reuters, the vehicle may (or may not) use self-driving technology developed by Apple, and it may (or may not) involve a "breakthrough" battery design that would be cheaper and provide longer range than current technology.

Apple security chief maintains innocence after bribery charges

A grand jury in California's Santa Clara County has indicted Thomas Moyer, Apple's head of global security, for bribery. Moyer is accused of offering 200 iPads to the Santa County Sheriff's office in exchange for concealed carry permits for four Apple employees.

Moyer's attorney says that he did nothing wrong, and notably Apple is standing behind its executive.

Researchers Found 55 Flaws in Apple's Corporate Network

For months, Apple’s corporate network was at risk of hacks that could have stolen sensitive data from potentially millions of its customers and executed malicious code on their phones and computers, a security researcher said on Thursday.

Sam Curry, a 20-year-old researcher who specializes in website security, said that, in total, he and his team found 55 vulnerabilities. He rated 11 of them critical because they allowed him to take control of core Apple infrastructure and from there steal private emails, iCloud data, and other private information.
