Intel releasing Thunderbolt optical cables later this year

Optical cables for Thunderbolt ports which enable faster data transfer over longer distances will be available later this year, Intel announced yesterday. Thunderbolt, introduced just over a year ago, is a high-speed connector technology that shuffles data between computers and peripherals. Current solutions are based on copper, but optical cable could provide much more bandwidth and on longer cable runs.

Apple posts security update for Safari browser

Apple has posted a security update for the Windows and OS X versions of its Safari web browser.

The company said that the Safari 5.1.4 update would address a number of vulnerabilities in the browser itself and its WebKit engine. Among the fixes in the update is a patch which addresses dozens of memory corruption vulnerabilities in WebKit which, if exploited, could allow an attacker to remotely execute code on a targeted system.

Apple likes to cloak its new products in mystery, so it seems fitting that visitors to its new energy-efficient headquarters won't be able to see much of the building from the road.

New drawings show the landscaping at the Cupertino, California campus will be extensive -- the spaceship-like building will be entirely surrounded by a thick layer of trees, mostly apricot. There also will be jogging paths and walking trails.

A new variant of the password-stealing Flashback malware aimed at Apple computers has emerged, which tries to install itself after a user visits an infected website, according to new research.

Flashback, discovered by security vendor Intego last September, is engineered to steal passwords for websites, including financial sites. Since its emergence, several variants have appeared showing its authors' innovation.

iOS 5.1 for iPhone, iPad and iPod touch is now available for download, and features new quick lock screen access the camera application, as well as the ability to delete individual pictures that have been synced to PhotoStream.

In addition, iOS 5.1 features Japanese language support for Siri, though Apple has warned that availability may be limited during the initial roll-out. The update can be downloaded through the "Software Update" option found in the Settings application on an iOS device with iOS 5 or later.
