Apple has banned the word 'jailbreak' from it's U.S. iTunes store listings, the latest indication of its disapproval of hackers who muck around with their tightly secured products.

'Jailbreaking' refers to the practice of hacking into Apple's products to allow them to play pirated software and media and, in the case of the iPhone and iPad, to be used on different mobile networks.

Symbolically, last month’s news of a hacking attack on more than 600,000 Mac computers sent a loud message: Apple products are now vulnerable to the same kind of mass infections that Microsoft Windows computers are.

Financially, however, it was the equivalent of a bounced check — a big flop that likely netted the criminals nothing, according to new research from Symantec.

Apple has filed a motion to dismiss a set of class-action lawsuits, which accuse the company of falsely advertising its Siri voice assistant feature for the iPhone 4S, under the grounds that the plaintiffs did not specify exactly what claims led them to purchase the device.

The Cupertino, Calif., company was hit with several lawsuits (1, 2) against Siri this spring. The complaints take issue with the advertising campaign for the iPhone 4S, alleging that Siri does not work as claimed.

The ETSI was scheduled to decide on the standard in March, but it postponed the vote because of continued disagreement between Apple and Nokia.

Apple's latest update to OS X contains a dangerous programming error that reveals the passwords for material stored in the first version of FileVault, the company's encryption technology, a software consultant said.

David I. Emery wrote on Cryptome that a debugging switch inadvertently left on in the current release of Lion, version 10.7.3, records in clear text the password needed to open the folder encrypted by the older version of FileVault.

Apple files claim to obtain iphone5.com domain

Apple has filed a claim with the World Intellectual Property Organization in an attempt to gain ownership of the domain iphone5.com, which is currently owned by another party.

Apple's filing, first reported by Fusible (via MacRumors), could be seen as evidence that Apple plans to name its next-generation iPhone the "iPhone 5." However, it could also simply just be an effort by Apple to avoid confusion among consumers who might think the domain is owned by or affiliated with the company.
