If you have an Apple device that is capable of running iOS 6, you might have resisted upgrading it after hearing people complain about Apple's new mapping application.

But you ought to have grabbed it with both hands for security reasons: iOS 6 patched a whopping 197 CVE-numbered vulnerabilities in 41 system components, broken down as follows:

AT&T announces cloud-based storage, 5 GB free for iOS users

AT&T's apparently jumping into the cloud storage fray with a new program called AT&T Locker.

AT&T's cloud-based Locker is hardly new, having been made available to Android users since this past September. But, as of today, iOS users on the network now have the option to enjoy that freemium service as well, with 5GB offered gratis. The service will provide up to 5 GB of free storage via an app to iOS users, with extra charges for any storage above that.

Apple continues work on iDevice security with movement-based theft detection

Filed with the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office, Apple's patent application calls for the use of a portable device's accelerometer, in cooperation with a specialized controller, to detect whether a "theft condition is present" and sound an alarm. The system is slightly less involved than the security invention Apple filed for in mid-October, however the new patent application's reliance on an accelerometer to detect theft is a novel idea.

Apple R&D spending up nearly 40 percent in 2012

Apple increased the amount it spent on research and development during 2012, though it remained a fraction of its overall spending.

According to the company's annual report, which was filed with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission this afternoon, Apple spent $3.4 billion on research and development during its fiscal year, up $952 million, or 39 percent from last year. The year prior, the company spent $2.4 billion, up $647 million or 36 percent from the year before.

Apple confirms iTunes overhaul delayed until late November

Apple announced on Tuesday that it will be pushing back the launch of iTunes 11 until November, citing unexpected delays and the desire to "get it right."

The news comes after Apple in September said the new media purchasing and management hub would be ready for rollout later in October, but now the company is delaying release until some time in November, reports AllThingsD.

Google's "enhanced" voice search lands in iOS App Store

Google is aiming to chip away at Siri, potentially converting some iOS device users to its own side along the way. The company announced on Tuesday that its updated Google Search app for iOS is now available on the App Store, complete with its new "enhanced" voice search capabilities that Google discussed in August.

According to Tuesday's Google Blog post, the new voice search feature aims to better recognize the context and intent of your searches while providing "the comprehensive Google search results you know and love."

Apple Exec Scott Forstall Fired Over Refusal To Sign Maps Apology

Scott Forstall, the head of iOS for the past several years, was asked to leave Apple today, a move The Wall Street Journal is reporting as due to his refusal to sign his name to the letter of apology for the incomplete feature set and poor performance of iOS 6’s new Maps app.

Around this time last year, it was revealed that Steve Jobs had been designing his very own luxury yacht before his death. Jobs had been collaborating with renowned French designer Philippe Starck on the project.

After six years of design and construction, Steve Jobs’s yacht has finally been finished at a shipyard in North Holland. The beautiful ship is called “Venus,” and Job’s widow, Laurene Powell Jobs, was there for the launch with Jobs’s three children.
