You can hack it

Like Jedi and Sith, hackers use 'the force' for both good and evil. SHANNON TEOH hits the alarm button ahead of next week's gathering of the 'good' sort of hackers.

IT’S simple. Computers are supposed to make life better. And they do. Email, Internet banking and online shopping are the most straightforward examples. But even credit cards and mobile phones involve a good amount of microchips.

The problem is some people might be taking the idea of “better” a step too far. And far be it from us to make moral judgments, but some things are plain illegal.

Like hacking into your bank or credit card account. Or telecommunications fraud. Half of all Internet fraud is related to some sort of subscription fraud at service provider level.

Now this might all seem like mumbo-jumbo, but the Hack in the Box Security Conference (HITBSecConf2007) promises to deal with these issues at a deeper level. “We know that the information might be beyond some people but the issues are about awareness. People need and should know about it to make the best decisions,” says Dhillon Kannabhiran, founder and CEO of Hack in the Box.L33tdawg: Just a reminder that walk-in registrations are accepted and the area in which the bzflag, ctf, lock picking village and zone-h hacking challenge is OPEN TO PUBLIC! See you guys next week :)
