Yahoo faces showdown with Feds over email access
Yahoo is be headed for a legal showdown with the US government over monitoring of email accounts.
The company is party in a federal court case in which the government is asking the company to turn over user email archives which include messages that the account owner has already read.
Yahoo is arguing that the messages fall under the protection of the US Stored Communications Act, a law which requires law enforcement groups to obtain a search warrant before accessing electronic data archives. The government is contending that because the messages have already been read, the data should not fall under protections.
