WarGames.MY 2011, Malaysia’s first online capture the flag competition, aims to bring the fun of tinkering and puzzle solving back to hacking! The event will allow Malaysian ‘hackers’ to showcase their skills in a secure and contained environment and prove that they are amongst the best the country has to offer.

Organized by Hackerspace Kuala Lumpur (HSKL), a special interest group operating from Damansara Utama and sponsored by Hack In The Box (HITB) and System Defenders, the competition takes place online for a duration of 24-hours starting from 00:01 (MYT) on Saturday 2nd July and ends Sunday, 3rd July 2011 at 00:01 (MYT).  The challenge will test participants in a variety of areas in IT security including reverse engineering, cryptography, network security, digital forensics, web application security and general puzzle solving.

“Competitions such as this online Capture The Flag (CTF) are excellent venues to identify individuals with the skills and the mindset of a real hacker,” said RuFI0, team leader of The Sexy Kambingz (TSK) who are co-organizers of the competition.

“In any CTF,  knowing how to run automated tools or compile publicly available exploits will get you nowhere as the challenges are custom written to test participants real knowledge of specific vulnerabilities. Anyone can run tools and scripts but it takes an actual hacker to understand how a vulnerability works, how to exploit it and further more, how to fix it,” he added.

WarGames.MY 2011 also offers bonus challenges for participants to have a chance at winning complimentary training passes to this year’s HITB Security Conference (HITBSecConf2011 – Malaysia) held from the 10th – 13th of October 2011. A cash prize of RM2000, sponsored by System Defenders, also awaits this year’s competition winner.
