Visa Begins Use Of Passwords For Online Transactions

Visa has begun a program that asks a user for a password to complete a purchase online. Visa, American Express and others have been using a CVV (Card Verification Value) as an extra number printed on your card to serve as yet another bit of evidence that you actually hold the card. While both passwords and CVVs create more data points to authenticate cardholders, they can also create the dilemma of making cardholders remember yet another password, making buying online less convenient. In the meantime, Visa continues to push their partners and merchant banks towards thinking strategically about security. In the coming months, look for continued refinement of Visa's security policies as well as other large companies who depend on electronic relationships to begin asking more of partners, suppliers, and even customers when it comes to security.
