Controlling who has access to online data and who does not can be a costly proposition, but there are guidelines for getting the job done efficiently. According to a survey conducted by the Computer Security Institute and the FBI, the largest security problem confronting corporations in 2000 -- following viruses and employee abuse -- was unauthorized access to corporate resources.

Larger organizations are cognizant of this issue and so have worked at securing online business environments for their business-to-consumer interactions. But smaller organizations and departments of larger companies -- which have similar needs to large companies, albeit on a smaller scale -- have not addressed online security nearly as well.

As it turns out, this is because of the high licensing, implementation and ongoing management costs traditionally associated with access control systems.
