Companies conducting business online find excessive security irritating. After all, what merchant wants to go out of their way to make doing business with them difficult? Exhibit A: amazon.com's "one-click" shopping feature -- something other merchants liked so much, they felt the need to challenge the patent. John Leyden, in a recent article for "The Register" chides Evidian, a subsidiary of Groupe Bull, for publishing a report that highlights the irritation of complex security measures after an incident last year where some of Bull's customer data was left unprotected online. Regardless of past transgressions, both Bull and Mr. Leyeden share the view that appropriate security measures, while definitely necessary, should not interfere with online business. They're right.
