PS3 firmware update 3.21 removes Linux support
One of the many great things about Sony’s Playstation 3 gaming console is it’s ability to do multiple things other than just being a gaming console. Blu-ray support, future 3D support coming with a firmware update, Netflix instant streaming, and being able to partition the console’s hard drive and install a separate operating system on the gaming machine set it slightly apart from the rest of the pack. Gamers out there from all over snatched up a PS3, installed a Linux kernel, setup their own e-mail servers, media centers, and reached out to grab porn torrents.
The word on the Playstation Blog (both UK and US versions) is that on April 1st a new Playstation 3 firmware update will do nothing more than remove the “Install Other OS” feature from the XMB. I am going to go ahead and call shenanigans on this one. Why would Sony remove something that gamers have been able to use since the PS3 came out? That, back then, users potentially paid $600 bucks for the PS3 to get a computer system they can do pretty much anything with? The kicker to all of this is all of that porn data and OS information that you have already installed will be gone and inaccessible once you do the 3.21 firmware update. So you better get to transferring people!
