Although one could definitely argue that anti-virus vendors are being proactive, is their main goal to seed the marketplace with fear of mobile viruses? In technical arenas, it is common knowledge that current PDAs are insecure and not designed for security-related applications. Recent @stake research has shown specific examples of Palm OS weaknesses that could be maliciously used for virus attacks. The best protection mechanisms at this time may not be anti-virus applications on your PDA, but rather: being aware of the physical location of the device at all times, disabling IR receive functionality, and not installing applications from unknown or untrusted sources. The first step towards security awareness and safety is not to simply install an application with a false sense of security, but to understand the virus threat model itself.
