The first commercially available fully open source Android Development kit is being released by Liquidware. This modular hardware platform and its open source software were developed at the request of Android embedded engineers and developers. It is used to facilitate speedy prototyping and deploying of Android-based systems.

The kit is marketed as the Android Modular Gadget Platform. A high performance ARM carrier board, an organic LED touchscreen, a USB hub, a wireless G card, and an extended capacity lithium ion battery are the platform’s five main inter-connectable modules. These are combined to create an Android gadget that can run all, or a selection of, APK Android application files as well as being fully network capable.

According to Liquidware’s director of product development, Justin Huynh, “The current Android devices on the market are designed for software only applications. They’re not designed to integrate into third party sensors, industrial control and automation systems, or medical devices.” Android developers and gadget engineers needed this capability in order to quickly make the proof-of-concept of a product functional.
