Nintendo 3DS Game Manuals Warn Gamers: Nintendo Can Brick Systems
Despite all of Nintendo’s attempts to block R4 flash carts from working on their DS handhelds, the hackers and pirates always seemed to prevail. For every firmware update and hardware revision Nintendo pushed out to squash game pirating, the hackers worked with twice the force, finding a workaround to get illegal ROMs back up in a matter of days. With their next handheld, the 3DS, Nintendo is confident that it can keep pirated games at bay.
As outlined in the official a Ridge Racer 3D instruction manual, Nintendo “will” remotely brick your system if it detects any unofficial cartridge running unauthorized code. Previously, for DS and Wii game manuals, Nintendo warned that unauthorized carts “may” render the system unplayable. It’s a cautious play on words by Nintendo, but recall what THQ’s executive vice president Ian Curran was most excited about for the 3DS last summer: there’s technology built in that device to really combat piracy. If we don’t see any flash carts running pirated 3DS software by the end of the year, we’ll tip our hat off to Nintendo. Just remember, where there’s a will, there’s a way.
