Next generation of super-secure internet networks revealed
A research team at Toshiba's Cambridge laboratories claim the system is virtually impregnable and can even alert users when a hacker is trying to steal information.
The system which works down fibre optic links is being tested in Vienna on a network of more than 1,000 companies but could be generally available in less than 10 years, claim the researchers. The team said the system, called Quantum Key Distribution(QKD), applies quantum theory to the movement of information. It is so secure because any interference or eavesdropping destroys the very data which the hacker is trying to steal.
Dr Andrew Shields, leader of the Quantum Information Group at Cambridge Research Labs, said: "I am quite sure this will become the standard for information security. The information is perfectly safe and virtually hack and tap proof."
